Around fifty automobiles have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Vehicles, exterior walls and mailboxes were marked, in some cases with swastikas, they announced in a release.
Law enforcement say they were alerted during the night on Wednesday night, when a man noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued fluid.
The fluid had been applied in the form of a swastika, they added.
Police then located many other smeared automobiles and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under laws prohibiting the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.
Law enforcement report early analysis show the substance was most likely blood from a person.
"At present there remains no indication as to its source; investigators are presently not informed of any injuries in association with the occurrence," they commented.
City officials stated they were trying "to solve the case" and have appealed to the community for tips.
A senior representative said the attack left him without words and required to be solved rapidly.
"This incident hits the center of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the extremist violent incident five years ago," he wrote on online, referring to the killing of nine people by a assailant aiming at people of foreign heritage in 2020.
